Have you always wanted to sit in a room and make funny noises with a group of people?
Maybe you are just someone who wishes their voice better reflects who they are.
Whichever it is –
The secret of successful voices is simple, practice, practice and more practice.
To help get you motivated, we are now offering All Gender Vocal Practice on Tuesdays.
The vocal practice is based on sessions as designed by Andrea James, noted trans community activist, artist and co-founder of Deep Stealth Productions. Each session includes Vocal Yoga and Practice Poetry.
Species are hard-wired differently to distinguish gender. Birds rely on sight, mice rely on smell, and humans rely on voice and sight. Many trans people experience the pain of being outed more on the phone than in person. We lose the ability to influence the visual clues. Masculinizing hormone therapy thickens recipient’s the vocal chords resulting in a deeper pitch, but feminizing hormones do not raise pitch. For everyone, pitch is only one part of what makes up the tone of our voices, intonation, intensity and quality are just as important. These are changed only through practice.
Vocal practice is a set of exercises that help anyone, any gender. They help you become more aware of how the different parts of your body produces your voice. We do a different set of the exercises each week for, followed by reading out loud a variety of materials from poetry to plays.
The ongoing drop in format makes it simple to make a part of your routine or an occasional tune up.
So if work on your voice is something you just keep putting off, just drop in and give it try.
